About Me
When I was just a wee thing, my parents enrolled me in music lessons. Since I flat out refused to attend preschool, my parents needed something to keep me occupied, and music was it. 30 years later, I'm still at it, which says something for the importance of music in my life. I vividly recall patiently waiting my turn to perform "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", complete with variations, dressed to the nines in a dress my grandmother had given me. As the years went on, I progressed far past "Twinkle Twinkle", learned how to play both violin and viola, eventually partaking in a nation wide honours orchestra for high school kids. I tutored viola and piano to fellow students, and taught piano to neighbourhood children. As if that weren't enough, I joined a Barbershop choir and a vocal jazz group (though I originally auditioned for that group on the piano, my teacher convinced me to sing instead).
I left home at 17 to attend University, where I completed my BSc in Psychology. During my first week there, I approached the music school to request a key for the practice rooms, only to be informed that as I was not a music major, I would not be allowed to have a key. I seriously considered switching my major at that point, but decided to stick it out, and sneak into the practice consoles whenever I was lucky enough to find one left open. Where there's a will...
After completing my degree, I moved back to my hometown of Victoria, BC, and brought my electric piano to live in my apartment with me. That was when I first started playing piano at weddings - a good friend asked if I would play at his, and so it began. Years later, when I got married myself, I couldn't find anyone to play that perfect song for me to walk down the aisle, so I recorded myself playing Chopin's Concerto in E, and had it playing over speakers as my wedding party and I walked down the aisle.
I grew up with the Suzuki method, and continued from there with the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum. I have my grade 10 certification, and completed their beginner piano teaching course. I also have my diploma in Early Childhood Education, and have taught weekly classes of Music and Movement to all ages of children. I truly believe that music is an integral part of early childhood development, and it is my goal to nurture a love of music in children of all ages (and even those who are still children at heart!).
